Miss Marple Books in Order
Miss Marple is Agatha Christie's quiet masterpiece: a fluffy Victorian spinster in a St Mary Mead village who solves murders because a lifetime of village life has shown her every sin there is - twelve novels across nearly fifty years, from The Murder at the Vicarage (1930) to Sleeping Murder (1976), which Christie wrote during the Blitz, locked in a bank vault beside Poirot's Curtain, and published after her death so Marple could solve one last case posthumously. The order question is friendly - publication order is chronological order - but the shelf hides two traps: the short story collections that predate and outlive the novels, and the two novels published decades after they were written, which sit at the end by design rather than by date of composition (1930–1976).
Where to start
The Murder at the Vicarage (1930), the first novel - Colonel Protheroe dead in the vicar's study, and Marple's village omniscience fully armed from chapter one. Readers who want the most beloved: A Murder Is Announced (1950), the one fans press on strangers. The Body in the Library (1942) is the famous Hollywood-adjacent premise.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, which is chronological order. Marple actually debuted in six short stories in the late 1920s, collected as The Thirteen Problems (1932) - readable anytime, and a good low-commitment door. The novels then run straight through with no resets: the village, the nephews at the Yard, and the running jokes all accumulate. Sleeping Murder (1976) goes last even though Christie wrote it around 1940 - it was the vault novel, held back with Curtain as her insurance policy, and it reads as a deliberate farewell. Miss Marple's Final Cases (1979) collects the remainders. On screen: Joan Hickson, whom Christie herself blessed in a letter, played her for the BBC; Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie followed; every era keeps finding her.
Which one is the best?
A Murder Is Announced (1950) is the fan and critic favorite; The Moving Finger (1942) is the warmest; 4.50 from Paddington (1957) has the best premise - a murder witnessed from a passing train; Sleeping Murder (1976) lands one of the most moving finales Christie ever wrote.
