Markus Zusak Books in Order
Markus Zusak wrote his first three novels young, about brothers and dogs and fighting in the Sydney suburbs he grew up in, and almost no one read them; then The Book Thief (2005) - narrated by Death, set in a German street during the bombing years, a girl stealing books - became one of the biggest crossover novels of the century. Then he stopped, publicly, for more than a decade of failed drafts, and Bridge of Clay (2018) came out the other side. His shelf is short, strange and slow, and this page runs it while flagging the two-countries title trap that catches almost everyone (1999–present).
Where to start
The Book Thief (2005), the door. I Am the Messenger (2002) for a lighter, funnier entry.

Does the reading order matter?
The Underdog trilogy runs strictly in order: The Underdog (1999), Fighting Ruben Wolfe (2000), When Dogs Cry (2001) - Cameron and Ruben Wolfe, brothers, the books that learned their craft. Note the title trap: When Dogs Cry was published in America as Getting the Girl, and The Messenger (2002) is I Am the Messenger in the US; same books, different covers. The Book Thief (2005) is standalone and stands above the shelf - start here if you are starting once. After it came the twelve-year silence, then Bridge of Clay (2018), the Dunbar brothers and the bridge one of them decides to build; it is denser and more formal than anything before it, and reads better with the earlier books in the rear-view. Three Wild Dogs (and the Truth) (2024) is not fiction - it is the memoir of the author's family and its three enormous dogs, and the newest book. One further thing: the trilogy is also collected in a single volume called Underdogs (2011), which is the cheap way to own it
Which one is the best?
The Book Thief (2005), the essential one; I Am the Messenger (2002); Bridge of Clay (2018).
