Joe Abercrombie Books in Order
Joe Abercrombie is the writer the grimdark label was invented for - then outgrew. The First Law trilogy (2006–08) took fantasy's chosen-one furniture and handed it to a torturer, a barbarian who wants to quit, and a self-pitying noble, and became the most-imitated debut of its decade. Since then his world has run in eras: three standalones in the same setting, a YA trilogy on a broken future sea, the Age of Madness return to the First Law world a generation later - closed, complete, in 2021 - and now The Devils, a brand-new series that hit the New York Times list in May 2025. This page sequences all of it, including the standalone-vs-trilogy question and where the sharp-edges stories fit (2006–present).
Where to start
The Blade Itself (2006), the debut and the door to everything. Readers who prefer tighter single stories sometimes start with Best Served Cold (2009) - it works standalone but pays off First Law character arcs, so it is the second door, not the first. Do not start with The Devils: it is unconnected to the First Law world.

Does the reading order matter?
The First Law world runs: trilogy (2006–08), then the three standalones - Best Served Cold, The Heroes, Red Country - each a self-contained story with overlapping casts, readable in any order after the trilogy. The Shattered Sea trilogy (2014–15) is separate YA, roughly post-apocalyptic. Age of Madness (2019–21) returns to the Circle a generation on and closes that world - Abercrombie has said the story he wanted to tell there is done. Sharp Ends (2016) collects the short fiction and sits best after the standalones. The Devils (May 2025) opens a fresh series elsewhere entirely; book two, The Heretics, is announced for May 2027.
Which one is the best?
The Heroes (2011), a single three-day battle that critics still cite as his masterpiece; Before They Are Hanged (2007) for the series firing on all cylinders; and The Devils (2025) for proof the well is not dry.
