J.D. Robb Books in Order
J.D. Robb is Nora Roberts' other name, and the In Death series is where she has spent three decades of it: Lieutenant Eve Dallas, homicide cop in a near-future New York, and Roarke, the reformed (mostly) billionaire who becomes her husband in book two. The formula - one whodunit per novel, one dose of the marriage per novel, urban sci-fi texture of auto-chefs and flying cars kept deliberately light - has produced sixty-three numbered novels since 1995 at a metronomic two per year, making it one of the longest-running crime-romance hybrids in publishing. Readers describe the series as comfort food with body counts (1995–present).
Where to start
Naked in Death (1995), number one - there is no honest alternative. It is a complete, tight murder investigation that also carries every load-bearing introduction: Eve, her past, Roarke, Feeney, Peabody arriving in book two. Starting mid-series works mechanically - each case stands alone - but the marriage is the series' spine, and meeting Eve before Roarke does is the whole point. New readers should know the cadence: books average 300 fast pages, the future is seasoning rather than setting, and the reading-rush reported by fans (I read thirty of these in a summer) is the intended experience.

Does the reading order matter?
Strict numbered publication order: In Death books 1 through 63, published two a year since 1995. The one wrinkle is the X.5 novellas - shorter cases slotted between numbers, first published in anthologies and later collected; casual readers skip them without losing the thread, completists slot each between its neighbors. One oddity to know: book 33 is titled New York to Dallas, the only novel without the in Death suffix, and it is a deliberate break in the pattern because it takes Eve back to Texas and her childhood. Two books a year has never slipped: Fury in Death (September 2026) is number 63, and number 64 is a safe bet for early 2027.
Which one is the best?
Naked in Death remains the best pure hook - the case that starts everything, and still one of the strongest. The fan-named peak is New York to Dallas (#33), the Eve's-past novel and the one title that breaks the naming pattern; Immortal in Death (#3) is the beloved early run's favorite, and Survivor in Death (#20) the tearjerker. The recent run is described by longtime readers as the smoothest of the series' life - the machine needs no excuses at this point.
