Famous Five Books in Order
The Famous Five is the series that invented the modern children's adventure story: Julian, Dick, Anne, George - Georgina, thank you, and never forget it - and Timmy the dog, twenty-one adventures of smugglers, wreckers, secret passages and impossible amounts of picnic food, published between 1942 and 1963 and never out of print since. Enid Blyton wrote the first book in a week during a holiday in Wales, and the formula she set there - school holidays, a mystery, a farm or an island, ginger beer - was still running at full power twenty-one books later. The order question is gentler than it looks: the Five age about four years across the series, the recurring characters matter, and this page lists all twenty-one in order with the ones that actually need it (1942–1963).
Where to start
Five on a Treasure Island (1942), the first and still the best door - the island, the wreck, and the introduction of George exactly as she should be met. New readers who start mid-series miss why George is George.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, which is also story order: the Five age from roughly eleven-to-thirteen in 1942 to their mid-teens by the 1960s, and the first four books do the introductions - Kirrin Island is established in book one and returns throughout. After book four the adventures are largely interchangeable: each is self-contained (smugglers, circuses, caravans, moors, lighthouses), so a child who receives book eleven can read it happily and circle back. Two honest notes: Blyton's mid-century England is its own country - boarding schools, cooks, almost no parents present - and modern editions have quietly revised some language over the decades. The series is complete and closed at twenty-one; the 1980s-90s continuation novels by other hands are not by Blyton and are not counted here.
Which one is the best?
Five on a Treasure Island (1942), the door; Five Go to Smuggler's Top (1945), the fandom favorite; Five Have a Mystery to Solve (1962), the late gem.
