Dork Diaries Books in Order
Dork Diaries is the diary-format phenomenon that owns the middle-school shelf: fourteen-year-old Nikki Maxwell, the new scholarship student at Westchester Country Day, her best friends Chloe and Zoey, the crush Brandon and the queen bee MacKenzie Hollister - sixteen notebook-novels of sketches, glitter and humiliation, fifty-five million copies in forty-five languages and 334 weeks on the New York Times children's series list. It is also one of the few kids' series with an order trap on both sides of the Atlantic: every book carries a different title in the UK, and the numbering skips an activity book at #3.5. Rachel Renée Russell writes it with her daughters - Erin co-writes, Nikki illustrates - and after a four-year silence the series came back in 2023 (2009–present).
Where to start
Tales from a Not-So-Fabulous Life (2009), book one - Nikki's first term at the new school, the diary that starts it all, and the art competition against MacKenzie. The series is episodic but the friendships and the MacKenzie war accumulate, so book one is the right door. UK readers: the same book is titled simply Dork Diaries. Readers after the boy-shelf sibling: Locker Hero (2016), Max Crumbly #1.

Does the reading order matter?
Numerical order, with two traps worth knowing. Trap one: the UK editions carry entirely different titles - book two is Party Time, book four is Skating Sensation - so a UK shelf and a US reading list will not match; follow the numbers, not the titles. Trap two: How to Dork Your Diary sits at #3.5 - it is an interactive fill-in diary, not a novel, and skippable. Note also the four-year gap: #14 appeared in October 2019 and #15 not until September 2023. The Max Crumbly spin-off (three books, 2016-2019) is fully standalone. Everything is episodic enough that skipping around will not ruin you, but the friendship arc pays best in order.
Which one is the best?
Book one and the pop-star arc (#3) are the fan favorites; #8, Tales from a Not-So-Happily Ever After, won the 2015 NAACP Image Award. The Paris volume (#15, 2023) proved the series had more to say after the long gap, and the newest, Tales from a Not-So-Bratty Little Sister (October 2024), hands a bigger role to Nikki's little sister Brianna.
