Big Nate Books in Order
Big Nate Wright - record-holding detioneer, self-declared genius, ruler of P.S. 38 - is Lincoln Peirce's comic-strip kid, syndicated in newspapers since 1991 and turned into an empire of prose novels, strip collections and a Paramount+ animated series. The shelf confuses parents more than most kids' franchises because the books look alike but come in three different species: eight illustrated novels (2010-2024), more than thirty comic-strip compilation books (the ones with a year's worth of daily panels inside), and the Max and the Midknights medieval graphic trilogy. They answer different questions - novels for story, compilations for laughs, Midknights for adventure - and none of them share a reading order (1991–present).
Where to start
Big Nate: In a Class by Himself (2010), novel one - Nate gets a fortune cookie that says he will surpass all others today, and spends the book trying. It is the source material the animated series builds on. Honest alternative: a reluctant reader who wants maximum laughs per page starts with a strip compilation (From the Top is the first) and meets the novels later; Midknights is for kids who want a fantasy quest with jokes.

Does the reading order matter?
No order required anywhere, with one soft exception. The eight novels are episodic school stories - any of them stands alone, though the 2024 comeback, The Gerbil Ate My Homework, plays best for readers who know the cast. The strip compilations are literally dated newspaper panels, completely orderless. Max and the Midknights is the only line with a real sequence - a trilogy with a continuous quest, so read it 1-2-3. The animated series (Paramount+, two seasons from 2022) adapts the novels loosely and spoils nothing.
Which one is the best?
In a Class by Himself remains the best entry and the funniest sustained novel. Goes for Broke (#4), the winter-chess-and-detention caper, is the fan favorite, and Blasts Off (#7, 2016) was the emotional farewell for a decade. The Gerbil Ate My Homework (2024) - Peirce's first novel in eight years - proved the voice intact. Among the Midknights books, the first (2019) is the strongest.
