David Baldacci Books in Order
David Baldacci has published a book or two almost every year since Absolute Power in 1996 - more than fifty adult novels across eleven series - which makes him the very definition of a books-in-order problem: readers finish one Amos Decker or Will Robie novel, love it, and discover a back list with five different leads in it. A lawyer by training and a Richmond native, Baldacci works consistent territory: Washington power, military crime, and ordinary people trapped inside conspiracies, delivered at speed. The honest way through his shelf is the series map - pick a lead, read that series in order, and know exactly one crossover exists (1996–present).
Where to start
It depends which door you came through, and the map above is the answer. Absolute Power (1996) is the classic entry: the debut that Clint Eastwood filmed, a standalone. For series readers: Memory Man (2015) if you want the strongest character hook - Amos Decker, the football injury that left him unable to forget; The Innocent (2012) for the best pure thriller opener, hitman Will Robie; Zero Day (2011) for Army CID investigator John Puller. The best recent door is The 6:20 Man (2022), a Wall Street murder mystery that assumes no back story and became his biggest launch in years.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order within each series, and the series never tangle - with exactly one exception: Daylight (2020) is simultaneously Atlee Pine book 3 and John Puller book 5, a deliberate crossover. A decade rule of thumb keeps the whole shelf organized: King & Maxwell and the Camel Club are the 2000s run; Puller, Robie, Decker and Pine are the 2010s core; Travis Devine, Mickey Gibson and Walter Nash are the current decade. The Nash series is the newest, opened in 2025, and the Decker series - seven books - is the longest of the modern run. Standalones sit outside every series and can be read at any point.
Which one is the best?
Absolute Power (1996) remains the classic. Wish You Well (2001) is the beloved outlier - a Depression-era family novel, no thriller machinery, and the book Baldacci says is most personal. Memory Man (2015) is the best series opener; The Innocent (2012) the best pure thriller. Among recent work, Simply Lies (2023), the cat-and-mouse thriller that introduced Mickey Gibson, and To Die For (2024), the third Travis Devine, show the current form. The Camel Club (2005) is the 2000s pick readers still recommend first.
