Dan Simmons Books in Order
Dan Simmons wrote horror that won fantasy awards and science fiction that won Hugo awards, crossed into crime and mainstream and historical fiction, and never wrote the same book twice. The shelf divides cleanly: the Hyperion Cantos, four books that carried space opera into literature; the horror run led by Summer of Night and Carrion Comfort; and the late historical monsters - The Terror, Drood, The Abominable, The Fifth Heart. Dan Simmons died on February 21, 2026, at seventy-seven. One novel, Omega Canyon, was announced years ago and remains unpublished as of his death; any page selling it with a date is guessing. This page runs the shelf in order and marks the two masterpieces (1985–2015).
Where to start
Hyperion (1989), the essential one. The Terror (2007) for the historical monster side.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order works, with one hard rule: the Hyperion Cantos is a four-book structure in two pairs - Hyperion (1989) and The Fall of Hyperion (1990) are one novel in two volumes, ending on a cliff; Endymion (1996) and The Rise of Endymion (1997) are the answer, set centuries later. Never read Fall without Hyperion, never stop between Endymion pair. On the horror shelf: Song of Kali (1985), the debut, won the World Fantasy Award; Carrion Comfort (1989) is the mind-vampire epic his horror reputation rests on; Summer of Night (1991) is the childhood one - It and Stand by Me readers' next book. The Crook Factory (1999) is the Hemingway-spy curiosity; Ilium (2003) and Olympos (2005) are the Homeric duology, and both truly require a refresher on the Iliad first. The Terror (2007) - the Franklin expedition, the thing on the ice, and the AMC series it became - is the late masterpiece; Drood (2009), the Dickens-Collins nightmare; The Abominable (2013), Everest; The Fifth Heart (2015), Holmes and Henry James, his last published novel. Nothing followed: a long silence, his death in February 2026, and Omega Canyon still in the drawer
Which one is the best?
Hyperion (1989); The Terror (2007); Summer of Night (1991).
