Chrestomanci Books in Order
Chrestomanci is Diana Wynne Jones's nine-lived enchanter - the man whose job is being better at magic than anyone in the related worlds, and who wears dressing gowns while doing it. The series runs seven books (1977-2006) across multiple worlds: Cat and Gwendolen in Charmed Life, the Italian-feuding Casa Montana and Casa Petrocchi, a witch-orphanage of a boarding school, and Christopher Chant's childhood, written eleven years after the book it precedes. That is the famous structural fact: the series was not written in story order, so the reading-order question has two real answers - publication or in-world chronology - and this page gives both, with a recommendation (1977–2006).
Where to start
Charmed Life (1977), the first book and the award winner - meet Chrestomanci as the established adult enchanter, with Cat as the entry point. Readers who prefer origin stories: The Lives of Christopher Chant (1988) first.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order: Charmed Life (1977), The Magicians of Caprona (1980), Witch Week (1982), The Lives of Christopher Chant (1988), the Mixed Magics story collection (2000), Conrad's Fate (2005), The Pinhoe Egg (2006). In-world chronology: The Lives of Christopher Chant (Christopher at twelve), then Conrad's Fate (fifteen), then a twenty-five-year gap to Chrestomanci in office - Charmed Life, the stories Warlock at the Wheel and Stealer of Souls and Carol Oneir's Hundredth Dream, The Magicians of Caprona, The Pinhoe Egg - with Witch Week unplaceable because it happens in a different world entirely. The recommended route here: publication, because Charmed Life is the book that teaches the rules, and Christopher's childhood lands as revelation rather than syllabus. All four short works are gathered in Mixed Magics (2000)
Which one is the best?
Charmed Life (1977), the gateway; The Lives of Christopher Chant (1988), the prequel that reorganizes the series; Witch Week (1982), the boarding-school one everyone rereads.
