Alexandre Dumas Books in Order
Alexandre Dumas ran fiction the way a studio runs film: he kept collaborators - most importantly Auguste Maquet, who built the scaffolding - and in the 1840s the studio shipped The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo at the same time. The grandson of a Haitian freedwoman and a French general, he became the most-read French author alive and never stopped spending faster than he earned. His shelf is enormous, but readers only ever arrive for two things - the d'Artagnan romances and Monte Cristo - and this page maps those two pillars plus the two historical series behind them, in the order that keeps every plot unspoiled (1844–1853).
Where to start
The Three Musketeers (1844), the door. The Count of Monte Cristo (1845) if you want one enormous standalone instead.

Does the reading order matter?
Two pillars, read separately. The d'Artagnan romances run strictly in order: The Three Musketeers (1844), Twenty Years After (1845), then The Vicomte de Bragelonne (serialized 1847-50) - the longest of the three, ending with The Man in the Iron Mask and d'Artagnan's death, so stop where it tells you to. Read nothing about that ending in advance. The Count of Monte Cristo (1845) is a standalone - no series, no dependency, just the longest and most complete revenge story in the language. Behind the pillars: the Valois trilogy (Queen Margot, La Dame de Monsoreau, The Forty-Five Guardsmen) is the Wars-of-Religion shelf, start with Queen Margot; the Marie Antoinette series (Joseph Balsamo through The Countess de Charny) is the French Revolution told from before the storm, start with Balsamo. Both deep shelves are for after the pillars, not before
Which one is the best?
The Three Musketeers (1844); The Count of Monte Cristo (1845); Twenty Years After (1845).
