Robert Louis Stevenson Books in Order
Robert Louis Stevenson wrote himself sick and died at forty-four, leaving the strangest split shelf in Victorian letters: the writer boys' adventure canonized - Treasure Island, Kidnapped - and the writer of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, the Gothic double that every psychological thriller since has been reworking. He also left an unfinished masterpiece, Weir of Hermiston, that critics rank with anything he finished. This page runs the shelf in order and marks the one pair (Kidnapped to Catriona) and the one coda (1882–1896).
Where to start
Treasure Island (1883), the door for most readers; Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) if you want the dark half first.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, with one dependency: Catriona (1893) is the direct sequel to Kidnapped (1886) - David Balfour's story continues the morning after, so read them in that order and fairly close together. Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) is standalone, and came out in the same year as Kidnapped - the same twelve months produced both halves of Stevenson. The New Arabian Nights (1882), his first book-length fiction, shows the macabre side already. The Black Arrow (1888) is the minor adventure; The Master of Ballantrae (1889) is the late masterpiece of the doubles theme - Jekyll's true heir, the two brothers as one divided man. Weir of Hermiston (1896), unfinished at his death in Samoa, is the coda and the what-if; read it last, knowing it stops. A Child's Garden of Verses (1885) is the poetry shelf, and among the most-quoted in English
Which one is the best?
Treasure Island (1883); Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886); The Master of Ballantrae (1889), the critics' late favorite.
