  1. Why did Jack Torrance lose his teaching job at Stovington before taking the Overlook job? — He attacked a student, George Hatfield, for slashing his tires. The Hatfield incident is the first sign of Jack's temper - the Overlook later uses the same wound to reach him.
  2. What is 'the shining'? — A psychic ability to read minds, see the past, and catch glimpses of the future. Danny has it strongest; Dick Hallorann recognizes it because he has it too - the ability the hotel wants to consume.
  3. Which room's dead guest haunts Danny, and how does the number differ from the film? — Room 217 in the book; the film changed it to 237. Mrs. Massey's ghost in the bathtub is room 217 in King's novel - Kubrick's film switched to 237 at the Timberline Lodge's request.
  4. What did the previous caretaker Delbert Grady do? — Killed his wife and two daughters, then himself. Grady is the Overlook's model for Jack - and its proof of what a winter alone can finish.
  5. What weapon does Jack use in the novel's climax? — A roque mallet. The book's weapon is the roque mallet - Kubrick's axe is one of the film's biggest departures.
  6. How does the hotel first get its hooks into Jack? — A scrapbook of the hotel's violent history he finds in the basement. The scrapbook feeds Jack's obsession with the Overlook's past - his book about the hotel becomes the trap.
  7. Who is Lloyd, and what does he offer Jack? — The bartender in the Gold Ballroom who serves him drinks nobody poured. Lloyd appears once Jack is ready - the hotel gives him the one thing his addiction misses most.
  8. How does the novel end? — Jack, briefly himself again, tells Danny to run; the boiler explodes and destroys the Overlook. In the book Jack's last act is love - he drops the mallet - and the forgotten boiler blows the hotel apart; Hallorann survives and leads Wendy and Danny out.

What this quiz covers

Stephen King’s The Shining sits in our thrillers & modern bestsellers shelf, and the eight questions follow the book the way a reader experiences it: how the story opens, the turn in the middle, the characters who carry it, and the ending people still argue about. You will not be asked for page numbers or publication trivia — but three or four questions are built to separate people who read the book from people who read a summary. If a question stumps you, that gap is your reading list talking.

Fair warning for the ambitious: readers who clear this quiz often move straight to the reading-time breakdown for The Shining to plan the reread, then test the rest of their shelf against the mixed classic literature quiz.
