  1. Who travels the road? — An unnamed father and his young son. They have each other, a cart, a tarp and a pistol with too few rounds — and they never say their names.
  2. What destroyed the world? — It is never explained — ash, cold and dead forests remain. No dates, no causes, no government broadcasts: just the aftermath, permanent, and the sun gone behind the gray.
  3. What do father and son repeat to each other? — That they are the good guys, carrying the fire. Two borrowed phrases doing all the moral work in the book — goodness as a thing you carry like flame.
  4. What do they find in the cellar of the house with the locked door? — People kept captive for food. Naked men and women in the dark, limbs being taken a meal at a time — the book's worst scene, narrowly escaped.
  5. What does the father find that briefly restores the world? — A fully stocked fallout shelter. Canned food, Coke, cots, a chemical toilet: a below-ground inventory of the lost world — they feast and stay days.
  6. What is wrong with the father? — He is dying — coughing blood through the whole book. He knows his real task is to teach the boy to survive him — the countdown under every page.
  7. What is the ocean like when they finally reach it? — Gray and cold, with nothing living in it. Not a deliverance, just a fact — the sea is the same color as the sky, and the boy swims because he promised.
  8. What happens after the father dies? — A family that 'carries the fire' takes the boy in. Three days by the body, then a stranger's voice: a man, a woman, a boy and a girl — and the fire, carried on.

About The Road

A father and his young son push a shopping cart south through an America of ash, dead forests and cannibal gangs, toward the sea and whatever goodness is left in the world. 'We're the good guys... we're carrying the fire.' The Pulitzer-winning minimal apocalypse. The novel runs about 58,000 words (roughly 241 pages in a standard paperback) — about 4 hours and 4 minutes of reading at an average pace. Before you commit, see the full breakdown in how long it takes to read The Road or calculate reading time for any other book.

Easy-to-moderate — stripped, spare sentences with the punctuation mostly removed; the bleakness is the only load. If you get 6 or more of the eight questions right, the book clearly stuck.

What this quiz covers

Cormac McCarthy’s The Road sits in our dystopia & allegory shelf, and the eight questions follow the book the way a reader experiences it: how the story opens, the turn in the middle, the characters who carry it, and the ending people still argue about. You will not be asked for page numbers or publication trivia — but three or four questions are built to separate people who read the book from people who read a summary. If a question stumps you, that gap is your reading list talking.

Fair warning for the ambitious: readers who clear this quiz often move straight to the reading-time breakdown for The Road to plan the reread, then test the rest of their shelf against the mixed classic literature quiz.
