- What does Thomas remember when he arrives in the Glade? — Almost nothing - not even his last name. The box takes his memory but leaves language and skills: 'He didn't even know his last name.' What he feels but can't explain is that he's been here before.
- What are the Runners? — The boys who map the Maze every day. Minho leads them: 'Everything we do - our whole life, Greenie - revolves around the Maze.' Two years of daily mapping is the Glade's only real project.
- What are Grievers? — Half-animal, half-machine creatures that hunt the Maze at night. Bulbous, metallic, stinging - a Griever sting brings the Changing, the fever that returns fragments of memory. Thomas later takes one on purpose to get those fragments.
- Who is Teresa? — The first and only girl sent to the Glade. She arrives the day after Thomas, announces 'Everything is going to change,' and shares Thomas's telepathic channel - the trigger for the end of the Glade.
- What punishment does Thomas take for breaking the Glade's cardinal rule? — One night in the slammer - then, unprecedentedly, promotion to Runner. 'If you want to throw me in jail for trying to save someone's life, then go ahead.' Alby sentences the night in jail; the council then makes him a Runner anyway.
- Why does Thomas deliberately get stung by a Griever? — The Changing that follows returns stolen memories - including the way the Maze works. 'So he was going to get stung by a Griever. Go through the Changing. On purpose.' He wakes with what he needs: the Maze is a code.
- What does WICKED stand for? — World In Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department. The acronym behind the Maze: sun flares scorched the earth, the Flare virus followed, and WICKED tests the survivors' brains for something that might save the species.
- How does the Glade's escape finally work? — The survivors fight through the Griever Hole and type the Maze's code into a chamber. The eight-letter section code the Runners' maps spell out opens the exit computer; the final stand costs lives - Chuck's among them. 'He died saving you... Just don't ever waste it.'
About The Maze Runner
A boy wakes in a rising elevator knowing only his first name - Thomas - and is delivered into the Glade, a walled meadow surrounded by a maze that re-lock every night and hunts. Two years of order built by teenage survivors starts to come apart the day after he arrives, and ends the day the first girl ever sent up arrives carrying a note. The novel runs about 112,000 words (roughly 374 pages in a standard paperback) — about 7 hours and 51 minutes of reading at an average pace. Before you commit, see the full breakdown in how long it takes to read The Maze Runner or calculate reading time for any other book.
Moderate - quick, plain YA narration with invented slang (shuck, klunk, Greenie) that explains itself; the mystery structure does the work. If you get 6 or more of the eight questions right, the book clearly stuck.
What this quiz covers
James Dashner’s The Maze Runner sits in our dystopia & allegory shelf, and the eight questions follow the book the way a reader experiences it: how the story opens, the turn in the middle, the characters who carry it, and the ending people still argue about. You will not be asked for page numbers or publication trivia — but three or four questions are built to separate people who read the book from people who read a summary. If a question stumps you, that gap is your reading list talking.
Fair warning for the ambitious: readers who clear this quiz often move straight to the reading-time breakdown for The Maze Runner to plan the reread, then test the rest of their shelf against the mixed classic literature quiz.
