- What does the Ghost demand of Hamlet? — Revenge his murder. The spirit of the old king reveals he was poisoned by his own brother and commands Hamlet to punish the deed — but to leave his mother to heaven.
- Who killed Hamlet's father? — Claudius, his brother, with poison poured in his ear. Claudius poured henbane into the sleeping king's ear — a murder with no mark, which is why the court believes a snakebit him.
- Why does Hamlet stage a play for the court? — To catch the King's guilty conscience. He adds a dozen lines mimicking the murder — 'the play's the thing / Wherein I'll catch the conscience of the King' — and watches Claudius run from the room.
- Whom does Hamlet kill by mistake? — Polonius, hiding behind a curtain. Hearing a voice behind the arras in his mother's closet, he stabs through it hoping it is the King — and kills the wrong eavesdropper.
- Who says 'the lady doth protest too much, methinks'? — Queen Gertrude, watching the play. Watching the Player Queen swear she will never remarry, Gertrude's dry aside lands as an accidental self-portrait.
- What happens to Ophelia? — She drowns in the brook. Mad with grief after her father's death and Hamlet's rejection, she falls into the stream among her flowers — the report of it is the most gently terrible passage in the play.
- How are Hamlet and Laertes both wounded in the duel? — They exchange rapiers, and one is envenomed. In the scuffle they swap blades — the poisoned rapier meant for Hamlet cuts both fencers, and the poisoned wine finds its intended backup.
- What are Hamlet's last words? — 'The rest is silence.'. The other three are all said by other people — Horatio's farewell is the most famous misattribution in English. Hamlet himself simply stops.
About Hamlet
A prince is asked by his father's ghost to murder his uncle, and spends four acts thinking about it. The most quoted play in English is also the first great study of paralysis — grief, disgust, performance and doubt grinding against a revenge plot that keeps demanding action. The novel runs about 30,000 words (roughly 150 pages in a standard paperback) — about 2 hours and 6 minutes of reading at an average pace. Before you commit, see the full breakdown in how long it takes to read Hamlet or calculate reading time for any other book.
Moderate — the longest and most philosophically crowded of the tragedies. The plot is simple, but the soliloquies ask you to sit inside uncertainty; read it with a notebook and it rewards you like no other play. If you get 6 or more of the eight questions right, the book clearly stuck.
What this quiz covers
William Shakespeare’s Hamlet sits in our gothic & horror shelf, and the eight questions follow the book the way a reader experiences it: how the story opens, the turn in the middle, the characters who carry it, and the ending people still argue about. You will not be asked for page numbers or publication trivia — but three or four questions are built to separate people who read the book from people who read a summary. If a question stumps you, that gap is your reading list talking.
Fair warning for the ambitious: readers who clear this quiz often move straight to the reading-time breakdown for Hamlet to plan the reread, then test the rest of their shelf against the mixed classic literature quiz.
