  1. Where is Yossarian stationed? — Pianosa, a tiny island in the Mediterranean. A fictional island too small for all the men stationed on it — the first joke.
  2. What does Doc Daneeka refuse to do? — Ground anyone for insanity, because of Catch-22. The rule: to be grounded you must be crazy; to ask is to be sane.
  3. Who keeps raising the number of required missions? — Colonel Cathcart. The ambitious colonel raising the count to impress his superiors, one mission at a time.
  4. What is Milo Minderbinder's enterprise? — A syndicate in which everybody has a share — that bombs its own base for profit. He contracts with the Germans to attack Pianosa and everyone profits except the dead.
  5. How did Major Major get his name and rank? — His father named him Major Major Major, and a computer makes him a major. Cruelly promoted by IBM machine, he spends his office hours hiding from visitors.
  6. What happens to Snowden? — He dies over Avignon, his insides spilling — the scene Yossarian keeps circling back to. The novel's buried core, revealed fully at the end: 'I'm cold,' and the secret in the tail gunner's sidcot.
  7. What does the chaplain believe about his encounters? — That strange visions keep coming true. He keeps recognizing things that then happen — the gentle, frightened conscience of the book.
  8. How does the novel end? — Yossarian runs for it, chasing Orr's escape to Sweden. 'I'm not running away from my responsibilities. I'm running to them.' The slash of the knife, then the run.

About Catch-22

Captain Yossarian, a bombardier on a Mediterranean island in World War II, wants to stop flying missions. The regulations say he can go home if he's crazy — and asking to go home proves he's sane. The novel that named the trap everyone recognizes. The novel runs about 174,000 words (roughly 453 pages in a standard paperback) — about 12 hours and 11 minutes of reading at an average pace. Before you commit, see the full breakdown in how long it takes to read Catch-22 or calculate reading time for any other book.

Moderate — circular comic logic and a big cast; the pieces click about a third in, then it builds. If you get 6 or more of the eight questions right, the book clearly stuck.

What this quiz covers

Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 sits in our american classics shelf, and the eight questions follow the book the way a reader experiences it: how the story opens, the turn in the middle, the characters who carry it, and the ending people still argue about. You will not be asked for page numbers or publication trivia — but three or four questions are built to separate people who read the book from people who read a summary. If a question stumps you, that gap is your reading list talking.

Fair warning for the ambitious: readers who clear this quiz often move straight to the reading-time breakdown for Catch-22 to plan the reread, then test the rest of their shelf against the mixed classic literature quiz.
