Wheel of Time Books in Order
The Wheel of Time is the fourteen-novel sequence that defined modern doorstop fantasy: Robert Jordan's story of Rand al'Thor, a farm boy who learns he is the Dragon Reborn - the messiah figure fated to save the world and break it doing so - ran from 1990 to 2013, 4.4 million words, ninety million copies, and a cast so vast that companion encyclopedias sell as their own books. It is also the series with the most famous completion story in publishing: Jordan died in 2007 with it unfinished, and Brandon Sanderson wrote the final three volumes from his notes. The order questions are real - one prequel, one change of author mid-river, and a famous sag in the middle - and this page answers all three (1990–2013).
Where to start
The Eye of the World (1990), book one - and push through to the end of it; Jordan deliberately wrote the opening chapters as a Lord of the Rings echo before pulling the story into his own shape. Do not start with New Spring. It is a prequel written for readers who already know the price of what Moiraine believes.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, one continuous story, no exceptions: books 1-11 by Jordan (1990-2005), books 12-14 by Brandon Sanderson from Jordan's notes (2009-2013). New Spring (2004) is the prequel, set about twenty years before book one - the settled advice is to read it between Knife of Dreams (#11) and The Gathering Storm (#12), late enough that the backstory lands as payoff rather than spoiler. The mid-series slowdown - books 8-10, the Crossroads of Twilight stretch - defeats some readers; the honest fix is that Winter's Heart's climax (book 9) is the hinge, and the series re-accelerates from Knife of Dreams on. The Amazon adaptation ran three seasons, 2021-2025, cancelled after season three.
Which one is the best?
The Shadow Rising (1992), book four, the consensus peak; The Eye of the World (1990), the door; and A Memory of Light (2013), the finale that stuck the landing Jordan planned for two decades.
