Tana French Books in Order
Tana French is the most decorated literary crime writer of her generation: an Irish former actor whose Dublin Murder Squad novels - each narrated by a different detective, each a character study wearing a procedural's clothes - made her the answer to what to read after Gillian Flynn, and whose later Cal Hooper trilogy moved the machinery to the Irish countryside and closed in 2026 with The Keeper. Her books share a city and a squad room, not a detective, which makes the reading-order question unusual and interesting: every novel stands alone, and the connective tissue is tonal - each narrator was a minor character in the previous book (2007–present).
Where to start
In the Woods (2007), the debut and still the essential entry - a detective investigating a child's murder in the same woods where he was the only survivor of an unsolved disappearance twenty years earlier. Honest alternatives: Broken Harbor (2012), the most acclaimed standalone murder case, works for readers who want the peak without backstory; The Searcher (2020) is the door to the rural second shelf.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, gently. The Murder Squad books are connected by a beautiful mechanic: each new narrator appeared as a side character in the previous novel, so reading in order turns the whole series into a relay - Cassie from The Likeness was Rob's partner in In the Woods, Frank from Faithful Place was Cassie's boss's nightmare, and so on. No plot carries across; each murder resolves. The two shelves do not cross: the Cal Hooper trilogy (The Searcher 2020, The Hunter 2024, The Keeper 2026) is one continuous story in one village with the same cast, and must go in strict order - The Keeper resolves arcs seven years in the making. The Witch Elm (2018) is a standalone outside both lines.
Which one is the best?
In the Woods and The Likeness (2008) - the matched opening pair - remain the fan canon; The Likeness, an undercover operation inside a family of suspects who resemble the dead woman, is the series' high-wire act. Broken Harbor is the critics' peak. Among the Cal Hooper books, The Hunter (2024) is widely called her finest in a decade, and The Keeper (March 2026) closed the trilogy on the year's most-anticipated lists. The Dublin Murders, the 2020 Starz-BBC adaptation, draws from the first two novels.
