Slow Horses Books in Order
Slow Horses is spy fiction's great insult comedy: Jackson Lamb's Slough House, the career-graveyard of MI5 where dumped spies do donkey work, drink too much and somehow end up saving the country anyway - Mick Herron's nine novels, the rare series that wins the Crime Novel of the Year award while its hero is picking his teeth, and the Apple TV+ adaptation with Gary Oldman that has run five seasons and been renewed through an eighth. The order question is clean - publication order, one continuous story - with two footnotes: a clutch of novellas that fill the gaps, and a television mapping that now runs two books to a season, which means the reading order is about to become the watching order for a lot of people (2010–present).
Where to start
Slow Horses (2010), the debut - River Cartwright's catastrophic training exercise, the fall into Slough House, and a kidnapping plot that announces the series' tone in one chapter. It is short, nasty and funny; everything after depends on it.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, straight through - the Slough House roster, the Standish thread and the First Desk politics all accumulate, and Herron kills without warning, so spoilers run both directions. The novellas slot between the novels: The Drop (2013), published in America as The List, sits between Dead Lions and Real Tigers, and Standing by the Wall (2021) collects the shorter pieces around Slough House. On television: Apple TV+ has adapted the novels roughly one per season through season five, season six covers two books, and seasons seven and eight are already ordered - meaning the screen is about to overtake the shelf, and Clown Town (2025), the ninth novel, is the newest. Herron plans a standalone before book ten, so no new Slough House novel is expected in 2026.
Which one is the best?
Dead Lions (2013) won the CWA Gold Dagger and remains the peak; Slow Horses is the perfect opener; London Rules (2018) and Joe Country (2019) are the mid-series twin highs; Clown Town (2025) - instant New York Times bestseller - proved the run still has legs.
