Louisa May Alcott Books in Order
Louisa May Alcott wrote potboilers under a pen name to feed her family, then sat down in 1868 to write a girls' book she didn't much believe in and produced Little Women — the novel that taught American literature to take daughters seriously. The March family books grow up with their readers across three decades, and the rest of her shelf proves she was always more than one book: sensation fiction, hospital sketches, and the work-novel she considered her real achievement. (1832–1888).
Where to start
Little Women, and ideally straight into its first sequel Little Men — Jo running her school is the direct continuation. An Old-Fashioned Girl and Eight Cousins are the two best non-March entries, both charming, both standalone. Work is the curiosity: the novel Alcott proudest of, a portrait of a woman making a living, out of print for a century.

Does the reading order matter?
The March family sequence matters: Little Women (with its second half, sometimes printed as Good Wives), then Little Men, then Jo's Boys. Everything else is standalone. A note on the confusing bit: An Old-Fashioned Girl and Rose in Bloom pair with each other, not the March books — Polly and Rose are their own heroines.
Which one is the best?
Little Women is the permanent classic. Jo's Boys is the surprisingly strong finale; Work is the rediscovery.
