James Joyce Books in Order
James Joyce changed what a sentence could do four times, with four books. The shelf is short - a story collection, a novel about becoming himself, the novel that reorganized the twentieth century, and the one that took seventeen years and invented its own language - and the order question is really how far up the ladder to climb. Dubliners is for everyone; Ulysses is one day in Dublin, June 16, 1904, now celebrated every year as Bloomsday; Finnegans Wake is the far end. This page runs the whole shelf, poems and play included, and marks the honest stopping points (1907–1939).
Where to start
Dubliners (1914), the complete short stories - every reader's Joyce. A Portrait of the Artist (1916) second.

Does the reading order matter?
The ladder, in order. Dubliners (1914) - fifteen stories of paralysis, ending with The Dead, the best short story in the language; start and possibly finish here without apology. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) is the semi-autobiographical novel, Stephen Dedalus growing into the writer who leaves; its Christmas-dinner argument scene is the hinge of Irish fiction. Exiles (1918), the play, is for completists - but it is the only place he wrote romantic jealousy straight. Ulysses (1922) is the mountain: eighteen episodes, each in a different style, one day - read it with a guide the first time and let the difficult chapters be difficult. Finnegans Wake (1939), seventeen years in the making, is written in the dream-English he built for it; sampled rather than finished by nearly everyone, and that is fine. Chamber Music (1907) and Pomes Penyeach (1927) are the poetry shelf - early, lovely, minor. The honest path is Dubliners, Portrait, Ulysses with a guide, and the Wake as a life appointment
Which one is the best?
Dubliners (1914), ending with The Dead; Ulysses (1922); A Portrait of the Artist (1916).
