Ernest Hemingway Books in Order
Ernest Hemingway wrote fewer novels than his reputation suggests — nine, several of them short — and changed the sound of English prose with every one of them. The method is famous: cut every adjective that can be accused of anything, keep the emotion under the waterline, let dialogue carry the weight. The subjects are equally constant: war, bulls, fishing, and men and women failing to say what they mean. (1899–1961).
Where to start
The Old Man and the Sea is the classic on-ramp — short, parable-simple, and the Pulitzer winner that capped his career. The Sun Also Rises is the better first novel: the voice arrives in the first paragraph and never blinks. A Farewell to Arms is the war book to read after those two.

Does the reading order matter?
All standalone — no series, no returning protagonist across novels. Reading in publication order does deliver the biography: the Paris expatriates, then the war wounds, then the Spain obsession, then the late sea-and-savanna books. The posthumous novels (Islands in the Stream, The Garden of Eden) are editorial constructions from his manuscripts — good, but not the place to start.
Which one is the best?
The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms are the twin peaks; The Old Man and the Sea is the Nobel citation book and the one most people have actually read.

Frequently asked questions
What order should you read Ernest Hemingway books in?
No — each novel stands alone. Publication order simply tracks his life; the posthumous books are best read last.
Where should I start with Ernest Hemingway?
The Old Man and the Sea for length, The Sun Also Rises for the voice. Either is a perfect first Hemingway.
How many Ernest Hemingway books are there?
Nine novels above — seven published in his lifetime plus two posthumous — before counting the story collections (his true claim to greatness, many argue), the non-fiction, and the posthumous memoir A Moveable Feast.
What was Ernest Hemingway's first book?
The Torrents of Spring (1926) — the first row of the list above.
