Emily Henry Books in Order
Emily Henry is the author who reset the bar for the modern rom-com: a former librarian and YA novelist from Ohio who published Beach Read in the middle of 2020 and has delivered exactly one sunny, sharp, emotionally serious adult novel per year since, each one an instant number one bestseller and a BookTok fixture. Her formula sounds simple - banter, a bookish profession, a lake town or a city, real grief underneath - but nobody else lands the voice so consistently, and the annual release has become a genuine reading-calendar event. The order question has the easiest answer on this site: all ten novels are standalones (2016–present).
Where to start
Book Lovers (2022), the fan consensus peak - a cutthroat New York literary agent, a small-town editor, and the funniest prose Henry has written. Two honest alternatives. Beach Read (2020), the debut about two rival writers in neighboring lake houses, is the classic entry and the cultural moment. And Happy Place (2023), the annual-pretend-engagement novel, is the one for readers who want her most emotionally serious book rather than her funniest.

Does the reading order matter?
Any order at all - these are true standalones with no shared series, no continuity, no spoilers running between books. The only ordering argument is craft-watching: read them in publication order and you can see the dialogue get sharper and the emotional swings braver from Beach Read to Great Big Beautiful Life (2025), which splits its narration between two writers telling one family story. Eagle-eyed readers do catch walk-on characters from earlier novels in later ones, but those cameos are a reward for veterans, never a requirement. The four early YA novels (2016-2019) are a separate shelf entirely.
Which one is the best?
Book Lovers is the consensus favorite and the book most readers reread. Beach Read remains the defining novel of the modern rom-com wave. Funny Story (2024) - a librarian and her ex's-friend's-fiance's... complicated - is the recent fan pick, and Great Big Beautiful Life (2025) is the ambitious one: dual narrators, a decaying estate, and the genre's most argued-about ending since it landed. Several of the novels have been optioned for film.
