Daphne du Maurier Books in Order
Daphne du Maurier was dismissed as a romantic storyteller for decades and quietly wrote some of the century's most durable unease: Rebecca (1938), the dead-wife book every domestic thriller descends from, Jamaica Inn (1936), My Cousin Rachel (1951), the story The Birds, and a late run of time-slip novels that anticipate science fiction. Hitchcock filmed three of them. This page runs the shelf in order and marks where the gothic runs deepest (1931–1969).
Where to start
Rebecca (1938), the masterpiece and the door. My Cousin Rachel (1951) as the second stop, for the same unreliable-heat.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, no dependencies - but the books cluster. The Cornish gothic run starts properly with Jamaica Inn (1936) and peaks with Rebecca (1938), which is Jane Eyre reworked with the first Mrs de Winter as the true heroine; Frenchman's Creek (1941) is the deliberate romance, the one to read when the gothic gets heavy. The King's General (1946) goes historical; My Cousin Rachel (1951) is the great ambiguous one - did she or didn't she, and the narrator never recovers either way. The Apple Tree (1952) is the collection containing The Birds, the story Hitchcock filmed in 1963. The Scapegoat (1957), the double novel, and The House on the Strand (1969), the time-slip drug novel that science fiction rightly claims, close the major shelf. The Loving Spirit (1931), the debut, is the Cornish saga that started everything. Read the gothic run 1936-1951 first; the rest is exploration
Which one is the best?
Rebecca (1938); My Cousin Rachel (1951); The Birds, in The Apple Tree (1952).
