Dante Alighieri Books in Order
Dante Alighieri was exiled from Florence in 1302 and wrote his way home: the Divine Comedy is a hundred cantos of a walk through hell, purgatory and paradise, led first by Virgil and then by the woman he loved from across a street when they were both nine. The order question is simple - the Comedy runs Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso, strictly - and the real decision is the translation, because terza rima, his interlocking rhyme scheme, has never been carried into English intact. This page maps the small shelf and picks the translations (1294–1321).
Where to start
Inferno, in any good modern translation. The Comedy is one poem in three parts, started at the beginning.

Does the reading order matter?
Vita Nuova (c. 1294) comes first chronologically - the short book of poems and prose about Beatrice, and the key that unlocks why paradise ends the way it does. Convivio (c. 1307) and the political works are for the deep reader. The Divine Comedy, composed between roughly 1308 and 1320, is the whole shelf: Inferno first, Purgatorio second, Paradiso last, strictly - the structure is the meaning, an ascent that cannot be read out of order. Inferno is the famous third, the one everyone quotes, but the poem was built to end in paradise, and readers who stop at hell have read a third of the argument. On translations: the Hollanders are the scholarly standard with unmatched notes; Mandelbaum keeps the speed; Clive James dared to carry terza rima into rhymed English; and Longfellow's is the beautiful antique. Pick one and stay with it for all three parts
Which one is the best?
Inferno, the famous third; Purgatorio, the quiet middle; Vita Nuova, the small key.
