Dan Brown Books in Order
Dan Brown writes thrillers that behave like puzzles: a famous city, a murdered expert, a symbol nobody alive can read, and a Harvard symbologist who can. The Robert Langdon series has sold more than 200 million copies, made The Da Vinci Code the best-selling adult novel of all time, and turned art-history lectures into airport-blockbuster set pieces. The order question has a clean answer: Langdon is one numbered series to read in order, and the two early standalones sit outside it. This page maps the whole shelf, marks the one book new readers actually start with (1998–present).
Where to start
The Da Vinci Code (2003) - the book everyone starts with; Angels & Demons (2000) if you want Langdon's actual first case.

Does the reading order matter?
Publication order, with one note: The Da Vinci Code (2003) was written second but reads perfectly well first - most of the world met Langdon there, and Brown wrote it to welcome them. Angels & Demons (2000) is Langdon's first case and the better structural twin. The Lost Symbol (2009) and Inferno (2013) continue in strict order, each hanging a new city - Washington, Florence - on the same engine. Origin (2017) is the fifth Langdon and the series' science turn: AI and where humans came from. The Secret of Secrets (2025) is the sixth and newest. Outside the series, Digital Fortress (1998) is the codebreaking debut, and Deception Point (2001) is the Arctic NASA mystery - both pre-Langdon, both standalone. Wild Symphony (2020) is his children's picture book with an app soundtrack, included for completeness
Which one is the best?
The Da Vinci Code (2003); Angels & Demons (2000); Origin (2017), the science-flavored late highlight.
